Competitive employment, exercise, hobbies or study: Any productive effort can improve mental health and reduce the symptoms of serious mental illness.
The medical establishment, insurance providers, even family and supporters may not expect much of one set back by illness. But these low expectations can be countered by the self discipline of repeated and focused activity. Moving, learning, or producing are all excellent therapies to overcome tough situations. Serving others makes life richer. And getting paid isn't bad, either. Work heals.
Do something and get better at it. We can reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness by taking care of ourselves and offering service to others through meaningful work.
